• 150g shredded cabbage
• 120ml water
• 100g okonomiyaki flour
• 1 egg
• 40g melty cheese
• 1 tsp vegetable oil
• cooked bacon, prawns or other favourite okonomiyaki additions
• tomato ketchup or japanese brown sauce
• bread rolls
• salad


  1. Finely cut the cabbage and chop any extra ingredients into bite sized pieces. If you’re not sure what you’d like in your okonomiyaki, take a look at our Osaka Style Okonomiyaki Savoury Pancake and Hiroshima Okonomiyaki style okonomiyaki recipes.

  2. In a bowl add the okonomiyaki flour, egg and water. You may want to adjust the ratio of flour and water or vegetable juice a little, depending on the brand of okonomiyaki flour you use. Mix well. Add the cabbage and melty cheese, then stir again.

  3. Warm up your hot plate or frying pan with a little oil. Pour on the okonomiyaki batter in roughly burger sized circles. Cook for around 3 minutes on one side, then flip and cook for another 2-3 minutes on the reverse.

  4. Top with the rest of the cheese and any other condiments or garnishes you like, such as brown sauce, and cook for another 1-2 minutes. Pop in a bread roll with some salad.


• You can use vegetable juice instead of water if you like, to make the batter more flavourful.
