Simple, easy, and delicious. Japanese Baked Sweet Potatoes are just that, and nothing else. All you need to do is bake them in the oven and have them as a snack or a side to any meal. Filling and nutritious, they will leave you wondering why you would ever want to fry sweet potatoes when you can simply bake them. Fluffy and slightly sweet, you can add toppings, but these are best served as is. 


2-3 whole Japanese sweet potatoes, we suggest using Naruto Kintoki sweet potatoes


  1. Preheat your oven to 180ºC. Wash and rinse the potatoes well to remove any dirt. Dry with some kitchen roll. 

  2. Wrap in aluminium foil and place directly onto the oven racks. Bake for about 1 hour and 30 mins until done. 

  3. Enjoy as a snack or side to a meal. Make into mash if you would like. Or enjoy it the traditional way as it is whole. 


- For a more traditional feel you can also wrap the potatoes in some newspaper if available.

- Baked sweet potatoes were traditionally cooked by placing them in a large container of hot stones and sold by vendors on the streets. In some places in Japan, you can still seem them serving sweet potatoes in the traditional way.
