Finish off your meal with a Japanese cockle-warming favourite; an oshiruko sweet red bean soup. This deliciously unique sweet soup is made from azuki sweet red beans mixed with Japanese rice cakes called mochi, and is eaten during the winter months. Enjoy for dessert, or for morning or afternoon tea when the weather is brisk.


• 4 mochi rice cakes
• 1 can azuki sweet red beans


  1. Start by adding the azuki and 1 cup for water to a large pan and bring it to the boil. You can adjust the amount of water depending if you prefer a thick or thin soup.

  2. You can cook the mochi in a variety of ways, but grilling them gives great results so place the mochi under a hot grill for 5-10 minutes.

  3. Once the mochi begins expanding in the grill, they are ready and can be put into serving bowls. Use two pieces per person.

  4. After the azuki and water mix has boiled, take it off the heat and pour over the mochi in the serving bowls and enjoy.


Instead of grilling the mochi, you can cook in the microwave by cooking on full power for approximately one minute, or alternatively boil in hot water for a few minutes until soft.
