Mochi is made from sweet rice that has been soaked, steamed, and pounded into a thick, chewy paste. It is then allowed to dry until firm enough to slice into the handy square or circle pieces available at Japan Centre. Mochi can be grilled, pan-fried or boiled, and once it is cooked it becomes soft, chewy, and ready to enjoy. For a great range of delicious mochi items, take a look at Japan Centre's Mochi section.
This mochi can be prepared in a number of different ways.
• Before heating, gently cut the surface along and across the top and bottom of the mochi, about an inch deep.
• Grill for approx. 4 minutes until it starts to brown. Leave for 1 minute and sprinkle with soy sauce or sugar.
• Boil in hot water until it becomes soft, season the same way or add to soups.
• Keep refrigerated after opening.
