Get your next party started with this fantastically savoury Japanese style sesame chicken. These strips of chicken breast are coated liberally in black and white sesame seeds before cooking, allowing for a roasted, nutty quality that goes fantastically well with mayonnaise or sweet chilli sauce. Enjoy as a hot snack or add to a bento lunch.

400g chicken breast
1/2 tbsp cooking sake
1/2 tsp sugar
a pinch of salt
1/2 tbsp mayonnaise
1 tbsp katakuriko potato starch
3 tbsp black and white sesame seeds
sesame oil to drizzle

possible sauce combinations:
mustard and honey
sweet chilli sauce and mayonnaise
mayonnaise and ketchup

  1. Cut the chicken into bite sized chunks. Put the chicken into a plastic bag and add all the ingredients one by one except for the sesame seeds and oil. Massage the bag, mixing the ingredients together thoroughly.
  2. In a tray, spread the sesame seeds and coat the meat in them.
  3. Preheat the oven to 190°C. Arrange the coated meat on an oven tray and cook in the oven for 20-25 mins until the chicken is cooked through.
  4. Before serving, drizzle some sesame oil on top to give a nice robust sesame taste. Then dip in a sauce of your choice. Alternatively, you could pour the sauce over the chicken.
