Plums have been used as a staple food/flavouring item in Japan and across East Asia for over a thousand years. Plum sauce, plum wine, pickled and preserved plums, plum rice balls and plum-seasoned sushi are commonly eaten in modern Japan, and it is believed that eating umeboshi plums for breakfast will help to stave off misfortune.
