Mouthwatering Mochi Selection

Let us introduce three ways to enjoy a beloved Japanese food with these simple mochi recipes. These blocks of hard pounded rice are a staple of Japanese New Year celebration foods. Hard enough to break with a hammer before cooking, after a little light grilling or a dunk in soup they transform into the most moreish, ooey gooey treat for any time of day.

How To Prepare

  1. Abekawa Mochi
    • 4 blocks of mochi rice cakes
    • 200g of prepared azuki beans
    • 5 tbsp kinako soy flour
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    1. Split your blocks of mochi in half lengthways. If you have special breakfast or half-size mochi you can skip this step.
    2. Wet the mochi and place in a heat proof bowl. Make sure they don’t overlap, then cover in clingfilm and microwave for about 45-60 seconds.
    3. Meanwhile mix together the kinako soy bean flour and sugar, then sprinkle on a flat plate. Next, bring some water to the boil in a pan and when the microwaved mochi has become soft, dunk it in.
    4. Roll the mochi in the kinako flour. Serve with any leftover flour and a generous scoop of azuki beans.
  2. Mochi Pizza
    • 2 blocks of mochi rice cakes
    • melty cheese
    • your favourite pizza toppings
    1. Split your blocks of mochi in half lengthways. If you have special breakfast or half-size mochi once again you can skip this step.
    2. Pop your mochi under the grill for about 5 minutes. The outside should start to look a little crispy and slightly light brown. If your mochi is still a little pale you can cook for another few minutes.
    3. Add the cheese and your favourite toppings, then grill again until the cheese begins to melt.

  3. Isobeyaki Mochi
    • 2 blocks of mochi rice cakes
    • 1/2 sheet roasted nori seaweed
    • soy sauce
    • sugar (optional)
    1. Warm up your grill to a medium heat, and grill the mochi on both sides, until begins to become crispy and smell nice and roasty.
    2. Brush soy sauce (you can add a little sugar if you like) on both sides, then wrap in the roasted nori seaweed and enjoy straight away.
