Whip up a satisfying sweet dish that is delicious for the tastebuds and easy on the waistline with this kanten gelatin dessert. Kanten is the Japanese word for agar-agar; a virtually calorie-free, high-fibre, gelatinous substance derived from algae and used as a thickener, solidifier, and (more recently) diet aid. This dish combines kanten with traditional Japanese sweet foods, giving it a classic look and taste.

Ingredients

4g kanten agar agar powder
600ml water

toppings:
kinako
sugar
kuromitsu syrup

How To Prepare

  1. In a saucepan, add the kanten powder and water, simmer until the kanten dissolves.
  2. Pour the gelatine into a mould and leave to cool a little, then place in the fridge for 2-3 hours to cool and harden.
  3. When the kanten gelatin is ready, cube the gelatin into bite sized pieces.
  4. Arrange into bowls/glasses with kinako, sugar and kuromitsu syrup. Enjoy.

Tips and Information

-    If you do not have any kuromitsu syrup you can use black treacle instead. Feel free to use your favourite sugar-free sweeteners like stevia as well to make it even more diet friendly.
