Fluffy mouthfuls of moreish red bean sweetness.

Squeezing a generous filling of chunky red bean paste between layers of soft castella pancake, each of these Marukyo dorayaki offer a sumptuous bite of the traditional Japanese cake. Carefully baked to give each cake a soft marbled appearance, these dorayaki maintain a moist and airy texture that soothes the chewy richness of the sweet tsubuan paste, made from plump Hokkaido red beans. A light treat suited to breakfasts, break-times and even the occasional late night snack.

Background

Dorayaki are one of Japanese cuisine's original desserts. It is said that their invention dates back to feudal Japan, when a Samurai warrior left his gong ('dora) at a farmer’s home where he was hiding. The farmer used the gong to cook ('yaki') round pancakes. For more exciting dorayaki flavours and other traditional Japanese desserts, take a look at japancentre.com's Desserts section.
