A step-by-step, comprehensive guide to writing katakana. This workbook explains how katakana works (as a syllabary mostly used for Japanese words from other languages), teaches stroke orders, provides lessons on how Japanese pronunciation is denoted through the use of katakana, and contains flash cards and audio download information for practice and study. Once a student has worked through this book, they should be able to confidently read and write the full katakana alphabet.

Background

Japanese is a remarkably unique language with regard to reading and writing, it being one of very few languages that regularly and consistently uses three writing styles. Two of these styles, Hiragana and Katakana, are syllabaries (where each symbol denotes a syllable or similar), while Kanji, the third style, uses characters that represent the meaning of a concept rather than its sound. For all the resources necessary to learn how to read and write in Japanese, take a look at Japan Centre's Kanji and Kana Books section.
