Green tea and rice… mixed together? Really?
Yes, it may sound a bit strange, but there is weirder food in Japan than this delicious combination! It’s a bit like cereal, but with green tea instead of milk and rice instead of cereal, so it’s not really like cereal at all actually, but similarly to cereal, it’s great to eat for breakfast and even better as a late-night snack!
Ochazuke has been a popular dish in Japan for centuries and was originally a way to use up any leftover rice. Now, ochazuke is often prepared with premade sachets of flavourings which just require rice and water. Read on for the easy way to make this delicious food.
• Ochazuke Instant Sachet
• Cooked Rice – 100g
• Hot water – 150ml
First thing you need to do is grab a suitable bowl for your ochazuke. Any small bowl will work great, but a traditional Japanese miso bowl is just the right size so use that if you have one.
Prepare your rice as per the instructions, or refer to our Japanese rice cooking guide.
If you are using leftover rice, pop it in the microwave for a minute or two to make sure it is warm.
Once you have the rice in your bowl, empty the contents of one ochazuke sachet over the rice and switch your kettle on.
Now fill up your bowl with 150ml of hot water and make sure that all the pieces of flavour are mixed well with the hot water.
Your ochazuke is now ready so relax, enjoy the taste and be careful not to wake your partner when you sneak back into bed after your midnight snack!
- You can add some extra toppings to your ochazuke if you like. Common things to add are tsukemono, those Japanese pickles, or try adding an umeboshi pickled plum for an intense flavour hit!
- Not such a fan of pickles? Try adding some wasabi for flavour.
- Don’t like wasabi either? Ok, try addint some shredded nori on top of your ochazuke.
